Also known as: L121A1, AW50, AW50F, Arctic Warfare 50

Overview

The Accuracy International AW50 is a bolt-action anti-materiel rifle chambered in .50 BMG (12.7x99mm NATO), designed for long-range hard target interdiction, explosive ordnance disposal at standoff distance, and anti-materiel applications. Built on a scaled-up version of AI's proven Arctic Warfare platform, the AW50 retains the modular aluminum chassis design, folding stock, and exceptional manufacturing quality that made the AW series famous. The rifle features a massive 686mm free-floating barrel with a highly effective muzzle brake that reduces felt recoil to manageable levels despite firing the powerful .50 BMG cartridge. The bolt action employs a multi-lug rotating bolt designed for the higher pressures and forces associated with the 12.7mm round. At 15 kilograms empty, the AW50 is one of the lighter rifles in its class, significantly undercutting competitors like the Barrett M82A1 in weight while offering bolt-action precision. The British Armed Forces adopted the AW50 as the L121A1 for use by sniper teams requiring anti-materiel capability.

Notes

The AW50 was designed to complement rather than replace the L115A3 (AWM) in British military service, providing anti-materiel capability against vehicles, communications equipment, and other high-value targets at extended range. The effective muzzle brake reduces felt recoil by approximately 50%, making sustained accuracy possible despite the .50 BMG's substantial energy. The folding stock reduces transport length to approximately 1130mm. The rifle can engage targets at ranges exceeding 1,500 meters with appropriate optics and ammunition. Standard British military issue pairs the AW50 with a Schmidt & Bender 3-12x50 PM II scope.

Background

The AW50 brought Accuracy International's renowned bolt-action precision to the anti-materiel role, offering a lighter and more accurate alternative to semi-automatic .50 BMG rifles. British forces in Afghanistan and Iraq used the L121A1 for explosive ordnance disposal at standoff distance, detonating IEDs from safe range with precision .50 BMG fire, a task that required the bolt-action rifle's superior first-round accuracy over semi-automatic alternatives.
