Notes

The ASM-DT represents the first successful attempt to create a single weapon effective in both underwater and surface environments. Unlike the earlier APS underwater rifle which used a smoothbore barrel optimized only for dart ammunition, the ASM-DT features a rifled barrel with shallow grooves that accommodate both standard bullets and underwater darts. The dual feed mechanism allows two magazines to be inserted simultaneously, enabling rapid transition between ammunition types. Underwater effective range is approximately 30 meters at 5 meters depth, decreasing to 20 meters at 20 meters depth. The weapon remained in prototype/experimental status and was eventually replaced by the ADS program.

Background

The ASM-DT was born from the operational frustration of Russian naval Spetsnaz who had to carry both an APS underwater rifle and an AKS-74U carbine during amphibious missions. The added weight and bulk of two weapons was particularly problematic for combat divers already burdened with specialized underwater equipment. Professor Danilov's solution of a single dual-medium rifle was revolutionary, though the technology required further refinement before the concept reached maturity in the later ADS design.
