Overview

The Atchisson AA-12 (Auto Assault-12) is a fully automatic combat shotgun that represents one of the most technologically advanced shotgun designs ever produced. Originally conceived by Maxwell Atchisson in 1972, the weapon underwent a comprehensive 19-year redesign by Military Police Systems, Inc. (MPS) under German-born machinist Boje Cornils, incorporating 188 improvements before entering limited production in 2005. The AA-12 fires from an open bolt and utilizes a proprietary constant-recoil gas system that absorbs approximately 80% of normal recoil, with a recoil spring capturing another 10%, leaving only 10% of typical 12-gauge recoil felt by the shooter. This revolutionary recoil reduction allows for controllable full-automatic fire at 300 rounds per minute. Chambered for 2¾-inch 12-gauge shells, the AA-12 feeds from 8-round box magazines or 20/32-round drum magazines. The weapon is constructed almost entirely from stainless steel with minimal moving parts and designed clearances that allow it to function for up to 10,000 rounds without cleaning or lubrication. The AA-12 weighs 10.5 pounds empty and measures 39 inches overall with an 18-inch barrel. A CQB variant features a 13-inch barrel. In 2018, Sol Invictus Arms announced plans to produce a semi-automatic civilian version called the 'Sledgehammer' with prices starting at $3,000. However, in late 2019, the ATF ordered a recall of civilian AA-12 shotguns produced by BC Engineering (owned by Boje Cornils), claiming the semi-automatic version constituted a machine gun under federal law. Background

The AA-12's development story spans over three decades, beginning with Maxwell Atchisson's original 1972 design. After producing only a few prototype-level guns, Atchisson sold the rights to Jerry Baber of Military Police Systems in 1987. What followed was one of the longest firearm development cycles in modern history. German-born machinist Boje Cornils spent 19 years meticulously redesigning every aspect of the weapon, implementing 188 changes and improvements. The result was a shotgun so mechanically different from conventional designs that it bordered on revolutionary. The proprietary constant-recoil system was unlike anything seen in production shotguns. MPS boldly claimed the weapon required cleaning only after 10,000 rounds-an almost unheard-of maintenance interval for firearms. In 2006, MPS partnered with Action Manufacturing Company and Special Cartridge Company to develop the FRAG-12 ammunition family specifically for the AA-12, creating a weapon system capable of firing high-explosive rounds at 300 rounds per minute. Testing at Action Manufacturing's Pennsylvania facility demonstrated the devastating potential of this combination. Despite impressive technical capabilities and widespread media attention, the AA-12 never achieved the military adoption its developers hoped for. The 2004 USMC trials resulted in no contract.
