Overview

The Barrett MRAD (Multi-Role Adaptive Design) is a modern modular bolt-action sniper rifle developed by Chris Barrett to meet a 2009 U.S. Special Operations Command requirement for an advanced precision sniper rifle. The MRAD's defining feature is its field-changeable barrel and caliber system, which allows operators to convert between .338 Lapua Magnum, .300 Norma Magnum, 7.62x51mm NATO, and several other calibers by loosening two Torx screws to remove the barrel from the front of the receiver, swapping the bolt face, and in some cases changing the magazine. The rifle features a lightweight folding polymer stock that latches to the bolt handle when collapsed, a full-length Picatinny top rail, and a user-adjustable match-grade trigger. In 2019, USSOCOM awarded Barrett a $50 million contract for the Mk 22 Mod 0 Advanced Sniper Rifle (ASR), and in 2021, the US Army awarded a $49.9 million contract for 2,800 Mk 22 PSR (Precision Sniper Rifle) systems, making the MRAD the standard precision rifle platform across US military forces.

Notes

The military Mk 22 ASR variant uses .338 Norma Magnum as its primary chambering rather than .338 Lapua Magnum, along with .300 Norma Magnum and 7.62x51mm NATO conversion kits. The civilian MRAD is available in .338 Lapua Magnum, .300 Winchester Magnum, .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm Remington Magnum, and .260 Remington. The MRAD SMR (Single Mission Rifle) introduced in 2020 is a fixed-stock variant optimized for civilian precision shooters. The MRAD ELR (Extreme Long Range) was introduced in 2024 for extreme distance shooting applications. The thumb safety is ambidextrous and can be swapped for left or right-hand operation. The rifle evolved from the Barrett 98B platform. With folded stock, the overall length is approximately 1016mm (40 inches).

The MRAD represents a new paradigm in military sniper rifles, designed from the ground up as a multi-caliber platform that can adapt to any mission profile. Its selection as both the USSOCOM Advanced Sniper Rifle and the US Army Precision Sniper Rifle marks the first time in decades that all US military branches will standardize on a single precision rifle system, replacing a patchwork of different sniper rifles across services.
