Overview
The CETME Model L is a Spanish selective-fire assault rifle chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, developed by the state-owned Centro de Estudios Tecnicos de Materiales Especiales (CETME) as the replacement for the 7.62mm CETME Model C battle rifle. Adopted by the Spanish Armed Forces in 1987, the Model L retained the roller-delayed blowback mechanism that had defined the entire CETME family since Ludwig Vorgrimler's post-war work in Spain, scaling the system down to the intermediate 5.56mm cartridge. Externally the rifle bears a strong visual resemblance to the Heckler & Koch G41 - a parallel development that similarly attempted to modernize the roller-locked platform for NATO's small-caliber era - but the two rifles were developed independently despite shared design DNA. The Model L features a stamped-steel receiver, polymer furniture, an integrated carrying handle with aperture rear sight, a fluted chamber for reliable extraction, and a three-position selector offering safe, semi-automatic, three-round burst, and full-automatic fire. Early production rifles used a proprietary straight 30-round magazine visually similar to the HK G41's magazine, but from the late 1990s Spanish production transitioned to STANAG-compatible magazine wells to conform with NATO allies. A carbine variant, the Model LC, featured a shorter 320 mm barrel and telescoping polymer stock, while the Model LV was an export-oriented version with a scope-ready receiver. The CETME L served as the standard Spanish service rifle from 1987 until its replacement beginning in 1999 by the Heckler & Koch G36E, marking the end of roller-delayed blowback as a frontline service rifle action anywhere in the world. Approximately 125,000 rifles were produced at the Santa Barbara Sistemas factory in La Coruna.

Manufactured by Empresa Nacional Santa Barbara de Industrias Militares at the La Coruna factory. Production ceased in 1999 when the Spanish Army selected the Heckler & Koch G36E as its replacement. A small number of Model LV rifles were produced for export trials, including evaluations by Mexico and Portugal, though no significant foreign sales resulted.

Muzzle velocity with NATO SS109 / M855 ammunition from the 400 mm barrel is typically cited as 875 m/s, though early Spanish-produced 5.56mm ammunition achieved slightly lower velocity (~860 m/s). The 1:7 (178 mm) twist was adopted to stabilize the heavier SS109 projectile, matching NATO standardization. Early production rifles (1984-1987) used a 1:12 twist and a proprietary 30-round magazine that was NOT STANAG-compatible - this was a major criticism and was corrected mid-production with a new magazine well accepting STANAG M16-pattern magazines, though many in-service rifles retained the proprietary pattern. The Model L was plagued by quality-control issues stemming from cost-cutting at Santa Barbara Sistemas, which led to its relatively early replacement by the HK G36E. The three-round burst mechanism was standard on military rifles; the Model LC carbine was often issued as semi-only to vehicle crews and special units. The Model L is the last select-fire roller-delayed blowback rifle ever adopted by a major military as a standard service rifle.
Background
The CETME Model L was the final chapter in the roller-delayed blowback story that began with Ludwig Vorgrimler's wartime work on the German StG 45(M) - the same mechanism he brought to Spain after fleeing through France in 1950, which was then reverse-licensed to West Germany to become the HK G3, and which now returned to Spain one final time scaled down for NATO's 5.56mm era. When the Spanish Army retired the Model L in favor of the HK G36 in 1999, it quietly ended more than half a century of roller-locked service rifles. Somewhat ironically, the G36 is itself a Heckler & Koch product - meaning Spain's rifle program has, for three generations, been defined by the work of German engineers.
