Overview
The Colt Python is a double-action/single-action revolver chambered in .357 Magnum, widely regarded as one of the finest production revolvers ever manufactured. Introduced in 1955 as Colt's premium revolver, the Python was built on the Colt I-frame and distinguished by its full-length underlug barrel, ventilated rib, and exceptionally smooth trigger pull achieved through hand-fitting and tuning during original production. The Python's action is a traditional double-action revolver mechanism - the trigger both cocks and releases the hammer in double-action mode, or the hammer can be manually cocked for a lighter single-action trigger pull. The cylinder rotates counterclockwise (opposite to Smith & Wesson revolvers) and locks at the front, rear, and bottom for superior rigidity and accuracy. Originally produced from 1955 to 2005, the Python was discontinued due to the rising cost of hand-fitting each unit. Colt reintroduced the Python in January 2020 with a modernized design featuring investment-cast stainless steel construction, a redesigned trigger mechanism, and improved durability. The 2020 Python retains the iconic full-length underlug and ventilated rib but uses modern manufacturing techniques to achieve the legendary smooth trigger pull without extensive hand-fitting. Capable of firing both .357 Magnum and .38 Special ammunition, the Python is available in barrel lengths from 2.5 to 8 inches.

The original Colt Python (1955-2005) was produced on the Colt I-frame with a royal blue finish that became legendary among collectors. Each original Python required extensive hand-fitting by skilled gunsmiths, making it expensive to produce and contributing to its eventual discontinuation. After a 15-year hiatus, Colt reintroduced the Python at SHOT Show 2020 with 4.25-inch and 6-inch barrel options, followed by a 3-inch model in 2022, and 2.5-inch, 5-inch, and 8-inch models in 2024. The 2020 model uses a re-engineered action with a leaf mainspring replacing the original's coil spring, and the frame is constructed from stronger stainless steel with 30% more material beneath the rear adjustable sight. Barrel rifling is 1:14 left-hand twist with 6 grooves, a Colt tradition opposite to Smith & Wesson's right-hand twist. Trigger pull measures approximately 10 pounds in double action and 5.8 pounds in single action.
