DS Arms SA58

DS Arms, Inc. · Battle Rifle · In Production · 1987

Also known as: DSA SA58, DSA FAL

Overview

The DS Arms SA58 is a US-made semi-automatic recreation of the FN FAL battle rifle, chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO and manufactured by DS Arms of Barrington, Illinois. Unlike many FAL builders that assemble imported parts kits, DS Arms fabricates the complete rifle in-house using new-production receivers and 4150 chrome-lined barrels, building on tooling originally acquired from Steyr's Austrian FAL line. The SA58 retains the FAL's classic tilting-bolt, short-stroke gas-piston action with an adjustable gas regulator, offering the rugged reliability of 'the right arm of the free world' in a modern, ITAR-compliant US-manufactured package. It is offered in a wide range of barrel lengths and stock configurations, from 16-inch carbines to 21-inch traditional rifles.

Notes

The SA58 is built around the metric-pattern FN FAL and accepts metric FAL magazines. DS Arms offers both Type 1 (lightweight) and Type 2 (standard) receivers. The standard traditional-profile rifle uses an 18-inch barrel; this entry reflects that baseline configuration. Muzzle velocity varies with barrel length.

Background

DS Arms got into the FAL business by buying the original Steyr FAL production tooling out of Austria, making it one of the only companies producing genuinely new-manufacture FAL rifles in the United States rather than reworking surplus parts kits.
