The FN Model 1949 is a Belgian gas-operated, tilting-bolt, semi-automatic battle rifle designed by Dieudonné Saive at Fabrique Nationale d'Herstal. Saive escaped Nazi-occupied Belgium in 1940 carrying the rifle's design plans, continued development at Royal Small Arms Factory Enfield as the EXP-1, and finalized the design after returning to liberated Liège in 1944.
