Overview

The FN HP-DAC is a compact double-action/single-action semi-automatic pistol, a shortened variant of the Browning Hi-Power developed by FN Herstal in Belgium. Chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum, it pairs a trimmed barrel, slide and grip with a seven-round duo-stack magazine, and adds an ambidextrous decocking lever and automatic firing-pin block. Marketed in North America as the Browning BDAC-9, it was intended for air force and personal-defense use.

Notes

The HP-DAC (compact) and HP-DAO (double-action only) variants entered production in 1990 alongside the full-size HP-DA/BDA9; all were discontinued in 1999. The compact will also accept the standard 14-round Hi-Power magazine.

Background

The HP-DA family was FN's early-1980s attempt to bring a modern double-action trigger and decocker to John Browning's classic Hi-Power, competing with the wave of DA/SA service pistols like the Beretta 92 and SIG P226. The HP-DAC compact was aimed at Belgian air-force crews and others needing a smaller sidearm without abandoning the Hi-Power lineage.
