Overview
The Fostech Origin-12 is a semi-automatic, gas-operated, magazine-fed 12-gauge combat shotgun manufactured by FosTecH, Inc. of Seymour, Indiana. Publicly debuted at the 2014 SHOT Show and commercially available from late 2014, the Origin-12 has been heralded as the fastest semi-automatic shotgun on the planet, with a practical cyclic rate exceeding 200 rounds per minute. The design is loosely derived from the AK platform, sharing the long-stroke gas piston and rotating bolt concept, but incorporates FosTecH's patented 'infinite gas system' that picks up propellant gases through two quarter-inch tubes immediately forward of the chamber and translates them to a piston/operating rod assembly. This infinitely adjustable gas system allows the operator to fine-tune cycling for a wide variety of 2-3/4 inch 12-gauge ammunition by adjusting a ported plug, with optimal ejection distance set at 5 to 8 feet. The billet-machined aluminum receiver houses a lightened, skeletonized bolt carrier group and features a full-length Picatinny top rail with side and bottom accessory rails on the handguard. The Origin-12 employs a quick-change barrel system that allows tool-free swapping between the 18.5-inch standard barrel and the 9.75-inch NFA short barrel. All primary controls are ambidextrous, including the safety selector, magazine release, and bolt release, arranged in a three-point operational layout for single-hand operation. The folding and collapsible polymer stock rides on a mil-spec buffer tube. The Gen 2 iteration introduced nickel-plated internals and a billet-machined carrier for improved durability and corrosion resistance. The Origin-12 feeds from detachable box magazines in 5, 8, and 10-round capacities, as well as 20 and 30-round drum magazines.

Notes
The Origin-12 is chambered exclusively for 2-3/4 inch SAAMI-approved 12-gauge shells. Three-inch magnum shells, reloaded ammunition, and metallic-cased loads are not supported. The gas system requires tuning when switching between different ammunition types, and some users have reported feeding issues with low-velocity or soft-hulled loads. The quick-change barrel system is one of the Origin-12's standout features, allowing rapid conversion between long-barrel (non-NFA) and short-barrel (NFA) configurations. In 2017, FosTecH introduced the SBV (Short Barrel Variant) with a 10.67-inch barrel and pistol brace, marketed as a non-NFA 'firearm' due to its overall length exceeding 26 inches. In December 2019, the ATF reclassified the SBV as a short-barreled shotgun and destructive device, forcing a recall of all SBV units. FosTecH offered affected owners a free replacement with either the standard long-barrel or the NFA-registered short-barrel Origin-12. The threaded muzzle (M22 x 0.75) is compatible with the SilencerCo Salvo suppressor using a Saiga adapter. FosTecH, Inc. is a veteran-owned family business founded by Judd and Sophi Foster in Seymour, Indiana.
Background
The Fostech Origin-12 was born in a garage in Seymour, Indiana, when veteran and entrepreneur Judd Foster set out to build the fastest semi-automatic shotgun in the world. FosTecH's patented infinite gas system was the key innovation, using dual gas tubes to capture propellant energy immediately forward of the chamber, creating a remarkably efficient cycling mechanism that earned the Origin-12 its reputation as the fastest-cycling semi-auto shotgun available to civilians. The shotgun became an instant sensation at the 2014 SHOT Show, with demonstration videos of its blistering rate of fire going viral in the firearms community. The Origin-12 faced its most significant controversy in December 2019, when the ATF reversed its earlier classification of the SBV variant, forcing a nationwide recall.
