Overview

The GA Precision Tempest is a custom-built precision competition rifle built on the proprietary GAP Tempest action, designed specifically for Precision Rifle Series (PRS) and National Rifle League (NRL) competition. The Tempest action features a unique 6-lug bolt design with a fast 60-degree bolt throw, matching the ergonomic advantage of Accuracy International-style actions while maintaining full compatibility with the Remington 700 footprint for stocks and chassis systems. A key innovation is the replaceable breach ring made from 17-4 stainless steel, pressed into the 4140 chrome-moly steel action body, allowing the action to be returned to new specifications if wear occurs. GA Precision, founded by George Gardner -- co-creator of the 6mm GT cartridge -- builds each Tempest rifle as a custom order with hand-lapped Bartlein or Krieger barrels, ensuring sub-half-MOA accuracy. The rifles are predominantly chambered in 6mm GT, a cartridge Gardner co-developed with Tom Jacobs of Vapor Trail Bullets, which has become the dominant caliber in PRS competition due to its low recoil, exceptional wind-bucking ability, and barrel life exceeding 3,000 rounds.

Notes

GA Precision is a custom rifle builder, so each Tempest rifle is built to customer specifications. Typical PRS competition builds weigh 15-17 pounds with optics and bipod. The Tempest action is also sold separately for other builders to use. George Gardner's influence on the precision rifle world extends beyond rifles -- the 6mm GT cartridge he co-developed has become the most popular caliber in PRS competition, surpassing 6mm Creedmoor and 6.5 Creedmoor.

Background

George Gardner of GA Precision co-created the 6mm GT cartridge with Tom Jacobs of Vapor Trail Bullets in 2019, and the Tempest action became the premier platform to showcase the new round. The 6mm GT rapidly became the most popular caliber in PRS competition, with the majority of top-placing shooters running GAP Tempest actions.
