Overview
The Garate Anitua El Lunar is a Spanish six-shot, double-action service revolver chambered in 8mm French Ordnance (8x27mmR), produced in Eibar by Garate, Anitua y Cia. Marketed under the 'El Lunar' brand and closely patterned on the French Modele 1892 service revolver, it was purchased in large numbers by the French Army during 1915-1916 to make up for the shortage of standard-issue sidearms in World War I. French troops nicknamed the type the '1892 Espagnol'.

Notes

Background
During World War I the French Army, desperate for sidearms, turned to the small workshops of Eibar in Spain, which flooded the front with commercial copies of the Modele 1892 revolver like the 'El Lunar' - guns the poilus wryly christened the '1892 Espagnol'.
