Overview
The Geissele Upper Receiver Group - Improved (URG-I or URGI) is a complete M4A1 upper receiver assembly developed through collaboration between Geissele Automatics and Daniel Defense, adopted by United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) in 2018. Unveiled at SHOT Show 2018, the URGI represents a significant upgrade to the standard M4A1 carbine, replacing the legacy SOPMOD Block II upper receivers used by US Army Special Forces Groups and the 75th Ranger Regiment. The system features a Daniel Defense 14.5-inch cold-hammer-forged government profile barrel with chrome-lined bore and chamber, optimized for the improved M855A1 (AB57) ammunition. A Geissele 13.5-inch Super Modular Rail MK16 M-LOK handguard covers nearly the entire barrel length, providing a slim, lightweight, and rigid mounting platform designed specifically to USASOC requirements. The mid-length gas system delivers enhanced performance and reduced felt recoil compared to carbine-length systems. The upper includes a permanently pinned and welded SureFire SOCOM 4-prong flash hider that serves as a quick-attach mount for SureFire SOCOM suppressors while bringing overall length to 16 inches for NFA compliance on civilian variants. The Geissele Airborne Charging Handle features ambidextrous operation with a low-profile design to prevent snagging on gear and incorporates a gas-mitigating fence to redirect suppressor blowback.
