Overview

The Ghatak Rifle is an indigenous Indian 7.62x39mm gas-operated select-fire assault rifle developed by Rifle Factory Ishapore under the Ordnance Factory Board. AKM-derived in its long-stroke gas-piston action and rotating bolt, it adds modern furniture including a folding stock, an ergonomic pistol grip, a recoil-reducing muzzle brake, and accessory rails. Finalized in the mid-2010s, it was offered to India's central and state police forces as a rugged counter-insurgency weapon.

Background

The rifle shares its name with the Indian Army's Ghatak platoons, the elite commando teams that spearhead assaults ahead of the main infantry force; 'Ghatak' means 'deadly' or 'killer' in Hindi.
