Also known as: MR308, MR308 A3, HK MR308

Overview

The Heckler & Koch MR308 A3 is a civilian and law enforcement semi-automatic precision rifle derived from the military HK417 platform. Chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO (.308 Winchester), the MR308 A3 retains the proven short-stroke gas piston operating system and cold hammer-forged, chrome-lined barrel of its military counterpart while being configured for semi-automatic fire only. The A3 generation introduced HK's slim-line HKey handguard system with NATO STANAG 4694 accessory rails, providing a modern and ergonomic interface for mounting accessories. Available in 13-inch, 16.5-inch, and 20-inch barrel lengths, the 16.5-inch variant offers an optimal balance between precision capability and handling characteristics for designated marksman and precision law enforcement roles. The free-floating barrel design and HK's signature polygonal rifling contribute to sub-MOA accuracy potential with match-grade ammunition.

Notes

The MR308 A3 represents the third generation of HK's civilian .308 semi-automatic rifle platform. The A3 designation indicates the updated handguard system using HKey slots rather than the older Picatinny quad-rail of the A1/A2 generations. The rifle shares approximately 95% parts commonality with the military HK417 A2, making it an attractive option for law enforcement agencies seeking military-grade reliability in a civilian-legal configuration. The steel upper receiver (shared with the G28) provides enhanced durability compared to the aluminum receivers used on many competitors.

Background

The MR308 A3 is essentially the civilian twin of the battle-proven HK417 and G28 military rifles, sharing the same legendary HK short-stroke gas piston system that has earned a reputation for running reliably in the harshest conditions imaginable. European law enforcement precision shooters prize the platform for delivering military-grade accuracy without the select-fire complications of its military siblings.
