The Hopkins & Allen XL Revolver is an American single-action rimfire revolver of the 1870s and 1880s, produced in Norwich, Connecticut. The large-frame XL series, including the six-shot .38 rimfire XL Navy and shorter-barreled XL Police, was the firm's bid to compete with Colt and Smith & Wesson service revolvers, while smaller XL-numbered models were sold as inexpensive pocket revolvers.

Background

After cutting its teeth building large-frame revolvers for Merwin, Hulbert & Company, Hopkins & Allen launched its own XL line around 1877, but the firm's reputation as a maker of cheap guns kept the well-made XL service models from ever rivalling Colt and S&W.
