Also known as: Optimized Battle Rifle, LaRue PredatOBR, OBR 7.62

Overview

The LaRue Tactical OBR (Optimized Battle Rifle) is a precision semi-automatic rifle chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO, based on the AR-10/SR-25 platform. Introduced in 2008, the OBR was designed to provide match-grade accuracy in a battle rifle configuration suitable for both military and civilian applications. The rifle features a 16.1-inch stainless steel match-grade barrel with a 1:8 twist rate, capable of consistent sub-MOA accuracy with quality ammunition. LaRue's proprietary PST (Port Selector Tool) allows the shooter to adjust gas flow between normal and suppressed settings without tools. The OBR uses LaRue's acclaimed MBT-2S (Meticulously Built Trigger) two-stage trigger with a crisp 4-4.5 pound pull. The handguard features LaRue's unique index clips mounting system and QD sockets for sling attachment. The rifle feeds from SR-25 pattern magazines and has an approximate 10,000 round barrel life. The PredatOBR variant reduces weight to 7.7 pounds through strategic material removal and component optimization while maintaining the platform's legendary accuracy.

Notes

LaRue Tactical founder Mark LaRue designed the OBR to address shortcomings he observed in existing AR-10 platforms, particularly regarding accuracy, reliability, and durability. The company's background in precision scope mounts and accessories informed the OBR's development, with particular attention to maintaining zero under sustained fire. The proprietary PST gas system automatically adjusts for suppressor back-pressure, eliminating the need for adjustable gas blocks. LaRue rifles are known for extremely long lead times (sometimes 12+ months) due to the company's small-batch production methods and quality control standards. Each rifle is individually proof-tested and accuracy-verified before shipping. The OBR competed in various military trials but did not win major contracts, though it has been purchased in limited quantities by special operations units. The PredatOBR variant, introduced later, addressed complaints about the original OBR's weight while maintaining sub-MOA accuracy guarantees.

Background

Mark LaRue is known for his outspoken personality and uncompromising approach to quality. The OBR represents his vision of what an AR-10 should be - accurate enough for precision work, reliable enough for combat, and durable enough to last a lifetime. LaRue rifles come with a 'lifetime guarantee' and the company is famous for including bonus items and personalized notes with shipments. The OBR has achieved cult status among precision rifle enthusiasts who appreciate its combination of accuracy and durability, despite premium pricing and long wait times. LaRue's famous tagline 'Accuracy. Precision. Dependability. No Compromises.' reflects the company's philosophy.
