Each M40A5 is individually hand-built at Marine Corps Base Quantico. The M40 series (all variants combined) has been produced since 1966, with the original order comprising 700 Remington Model 40x rifles. Exact production numbers for the A5 variant are not publicly disclosed.

Unlike mass-produced military rifles, each M40 is individually built to exacting standards by USMC armorers at Quantico. The M40 series has been in continuous USMC service since 1966, making it one of the longest-serving sniper rifle platforms in any military. The M40A5 weighs approximately 8.59 kg (18.94 lbs) when fully equipped with scope, bipod, sling, and loaded 5-round magazine, and approximately 9.18 kg (20.24 lbs) with sound suppressor installed. The overall length with suppressor is 1,356mm (53.37 inches). The Philippine Marine Corps received 85 M40A5 rifles delivered in 2017, which saw service during the Siege of Marawi. The M40 series is being gradually replaced by the Mk 13 Mod 7 chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum for greater range capability.
Background
The M40 rifle series has been the USMC's standard sniper rifle since the Vietnam War, when the Marine Corps ordered 700 Remington Model 40x target rifles and assigned them the M40 designation. Every M40 variant since has been hand-built at Quantico by USMC armorers, making it one of the few military weapons that is custom-assembled for each individual rifle rather than factory mass-produced. The M40A5 carries forward this tradition of craftsmanship, with each rifle built to sub-MOA accuracy standards.
