Overview
The Maadi RML is a semi-automatic carbine variant of the Egyptian-built AKM, chambered in 7.62x39mm. Manufactured at Factory 54 by the Maadi Company for Engineering Industries, the RML configuration was produced with a longer 20-inch barrel and a semi-automatic-only fire control group to satisfy United States import regulations after the 1989 ban on importing select-fire-pattern rifles. Maadi rifles are gas-operated, use a stamped AKM receiver and a chrome-lined barrel, and are noted for the quality of their Soviet-trained Egyptian craftsmanship.

Notes
RML is generally read as 'Rifle, Maadi, Long', describing the long-barrel semi-automatic export configuration. Imported in limited numbers into the US in the early 1990s before the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban; later examples arrived as parts kits assembled to 922(r) compliance.
Background
Egyptian Maadi AKMs were built at Factory 54 in Cairo with Soviet technical assistance under the 1960s USSR-Egypt military aid program, and gained a reputation among collectors as among the best-finished AKM-pattern rifles ever exported.
