Overview
The Merkel 303 is a premium German over-under shotgun produced by Merkel since 1924. Chambered most commonly in 12 gauge, it uses a break-action design with detachable sidelocks featuring a hidden crank and sunburst pattern, a Kersten locking mechanism with double underlug locking, ejectors, and a hand-engraved English arabesque finish. Built largely by hand, the 303 is regarded as one of Merkel's flagship sporting and hunting shotguns.

Background
Merkel of Suhl, in the Thuringian gunmaking tradition, introduced the 303 sidelock over-under in 1924, and it has remained a benchmark for hand-crafted German over-under shotguns ever since.
