Overview
The Merkel KR1 is a German switch-barrel bolt-action hunting rifle manufactured in Suhl. Introduced in 2007, it uses a turn-bolt action with twin rows of three locking lugs that lock directly into the barrel, allowing the shooter to change calibre by swapping the barrel, bolt head and magazine on a common stock and receiver. The barrel is retained by two threaded studs and the scope mounts to a quick-detach saddle on the barrel rather than the receiver, preserving zero through barrel changes. It feeds from a detachable box magazine, fits a single-set trigger and a traditional walnut hunting stock.

Background
Merkel of Suhl, long renowned for fine double rifles, drillings and shotguns, entered the modern switch-barrel market with the KR1, first shown at the 2007 SHOT Show as a more affordable alternative to the Blaser and Sauer take-down designs.
