Also known as: Mossberg Model 472, 472PR, 472PC, 472SA, 472SB

Overview

The Mossberg 472 is an American lever-action rifle produced by O.F. Mossberg & Sons from 1972 to 1983. Chambered in .30-30 Winchester or .35 Remington, it used a Winchester-style locking-bolt mechanism with a side-ejecting receiver that allowed easy scope mounting, and it fed from a tubular magazine beneath the barrel. Frequently compared to Marlin's Model 336, the 472 was offered as a pistol-grip rifle (472PR) with a 24-inch barrel, a straight-stock carbine (472PC) with a 20-inch barrel, and short-barreled brush guns (472SA and 472SB) with 18-inch barrels. Production ended in 1983 with a final run of Roy Rogers commemorative carbines.

Notes

An unusual design feature placed the trigger on the lever loop, allowing very rapid cycling. The line was succeeded by the improved 479-series; the final 472-family production was a 5,000-piece Roy Rogers commemorative edition (Model 479RR) in 1983.

Background

The Mossberg 472 marked the company's entry into the traditional American lever-action carbine market long dominated by Winchester and Marlin, and it is remembered as a competent, affordable .30-30 brush rifle. Its final commemorative run honored Western film star Roy Rogers and his horse Trigger.
