Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag
O.F. Mossberg & Sons · Shotgun · In Production · 1988
Also known as: 835 Ulti-Mag, Mossberg 835, 835 Turkey
Overview
The Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag is a pump-action 12-gauge shotgun and the world's first pump-action designed specifically to chamber 3.5-inch magnum shotshells, while remaining fully compatible with 2.75-inch and 3-inch loads. Its signature feature is the overbored barrel, machined to 10-gauge bore dimensions (.775 inch versus the standard 12-gauge .729 inch) for the entire barrel length, which reduces pellet deformation and produces tighter, more uniform patterns. The 835 is purpose-built for turkey hunting and waterfowling where maximum payload and pattern density are critical. It features Mossberg's Accu-Mag choke system optimized for the overbored barrel, dual extractors, twin action bars, steel-to-steel lockup, and the signature top-mounted ambidextrous tang safety.

Notes
The 835 Ulti-Mag was introduced in 1988 as the world's first pump-action shotgun capable of chambering 3.5-inch magnum shells. The overbored barrel is the key differentiator - at .775 inch bore diameter, it matches 10-gauge dimensions while using standard 12-gauge shells, providing less pellet deformation and tighter patterns. Turkey models feature shorter 20-24 inch barrels with Ulti-Full extra-tight chokes and fiber optic sights; waterfowl models have 28-inch barrels for longer shots. Available in various camo patterns. Specifications listed are for the Turkey model with 24-inch barrel. Weight: 7.5 lbs (3402g). Overall length: 44.75" (1137mm). MSRP: $661-$916.
Background
The Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag was revolutionary when introduced in 1988 as the world's first pump-action shotgun designed from the ground up for 3.5-inch magnum shells. Its overbored barrel - machined to 10-gauge dimensions while firing 12-gauge ammunition - was a novel approach to improving pattern density that has since influenced turkey and waterfowl shotgun design across the industry. The 835 remains one of the most popular dedicated turkey shotguns in North America.
