The Mossberg 930 SPX (Special Purpose Extreme) is a gas-operated semi-automatic 12-gauge tactical shotgun manufactured by O.F. Mossberg & Sons. Built on the proven Mossberg 930 platform originally developed for waterfowl hunting, the SPX variant is purpose-configured for home defense, law enforcement, and tactical competition use. It features Mossberg's proprietary self-regulating dual-gas-vent system, which automatically bleeds excess gas to reliably cycle both light 2 3/4-inch target loads and heavy 3-inch magnum shells without manual adjustment, while simultaneously reducing felt recoil. The SPX ships with a factory-installed extended magazine tube providing 7+1 capacity, a Picatinny rail receiver mount, and LPA/M16-style ghost ring sights with a red fiber-optic front post for rapid target acquisition in low-light conditions. The 18.5-inch cylinder-bore barrel is optimized for buckshot and slug patterns at defensive distances. The receiver is machined from lightweight aluminum alloy, keeping overall weight at approximately 7.5 pounds, and the matte-black finish provides a low-signature tactical appearance. The Mossberg 930 platform was introduced around 2005 as a gas-operated semi-auto evolution of Mossberg's hunting shotgun lineup. The SPX tactical variant arrived around 2008-2009. The self-regulating gas system was specifically engineered to eliminate the common problem of semi-auto shotguns failing to cycle light loads reliably. The EZ-Empty system allows rapid unloading without cycling each shell through the action -- depressing the bolt release raises the carrier so shells can be manually extracted from the magazine tube. A chrome-ball cocking indicator visible in the trigger guard provides a visual and tactile loaded-chamber check. The 930 SPX was followed by the Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical platform, which further refined the gas system and added features like a slimmer forend and improved loading gate, though the 930 SPX remains in production and widely available. The pistol-grip variant (model 85370) adds a full pistol grip stock for an alternative ergonomic configuration.
