Overview

The NSV (Russian: Никитина-Соколова-Волкова), known by its service nickname 'Utes' ('Cliff'), is a Soviet 12.7x108mm heavy machine gun introduced in 1971 to replace the heavier and dated DShKM as the Soviet Army's standard infantry, vehicle, and anti-aircraft heavy MG. Designed by the team of G.I. Nikitin, Yu.M. Sokolov, and V.I. Volkov at the Tula design bureau and primarily manufactured at the Metalist Plant in Uralsk, Kazakh SSR, the NSV uses a gas-operated long-stroke piston action firing from an open bolt and feeds from non-disintegrating 50-round metallic-link belts. At 25 kg the gun body is roughly 9 kg lighter than the DShKM despite firing the same powerful 12.7x108mm cartridge, and the NSV's chrome-lined quick-change barrel, side-feeding belt mechanism, and stamped-steel receiver make it dramatically more practical for sustained infantry use. Standard infantry mountings use the 6T7 'Stepanov' tripod for ground/anti-aircraft roles or the 6T9 lightweight tripod; tank applications use the NSVT designation with electric solenoid trigger and special sights, while the NSVS is an anti-aircraft variant. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union the Metalist plant ended up in independent Kazakhstan, leading Russia to develop the domestically-produced Kord (6P50) as a successor in the late 1990s. The NSV nonetheless remains in widespread service across former Warsaw Pact members, India, China-aligned states, and many Cold War client nations, and saw active combat use in nearly every major conflict from the Soviet-Afghan War onward.

Primary production at Metalist Plant, Uralsk, Kazakh SSR ended in the early 1990s following Soviet dissolution. License-produced as WKM-B in Poland and as Bulgarian variants. Replaced in Russian primary production by the Kord 6P50 in 1998.

Notes

The 'Utes' nickname (sometimes transliterated 'Utyos') translates approximately to 'Cliff' or 'Crag' - a typical Soviet weapons-program code name. The NSV's side-feeding belt mechanism allows the weapon to be flipped between left-hand and right-hand feed for crew preference and mounting requirements. The weapon fires from an open bolt to aid cooling and prevent cook-offs during sustained fire. NSVT tank variants are typically mounted on commander's cupolas of T-64, T-72, T-80, T-90, BTR-T, and BMP variants. The Polish WKM-B variant is rechambered for .50 BMG (12.7x99mm NATO) for compatibility with NATO logistics. Production at Metalist effectively ceased in the early 1990s when the plant became Kazakh property; the design lives on through the Russian Kord which inherits much of the NSV's layout and mounting hardware. Combat experience in Afghanistan and Chechnya highlighted some receiver-life issues with stamped components when fired at sustained maximum cyclic rates, partly motivating the Kord redesign.

Background

When the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, the Russian Army woke up to discover that the entire production line for its standard heavy machine gun was now in a foreign country - Kazakhstan retained the Metalist plant in Uralsk along with the NSV's tooling, drawings, and manufacturing expertise. This single moment of geopolitical bad luck forced Russia to spend nearly a decade developing the entirely new Kord HMG simply because they could no longer manufacture their existing one.
