Overview
The PP-19-01 Vityaz is a selective-fire 9×19mm Parabellum submachine gun developed by Izhmash in 2004 and adopted by the Russian Interior Ministry in 2005. Built on a modified AKS-74U/AK-105-pattern receiver, it operates on simple blowback from a closed bolt and shares extensive parts commonality with the AK-74 family. It feeds from a proprietary 30-round polymer box magazine with a quick-couple feature and fires semi- or fully-automatic via an AK-style selector lever. The Vityaz-SN modernization (~2008) adds Picatinny rail mounting on a hinged dust cover. It is now the standard SMG of Russian law enforcement and security services and is compatible with overpressure 7N21/7N31 armor-piercing 9×19mm ammunition.

Notes
Distinct from the earlier PP-19 Bizon (helical magazine - separate entry). Designer commonly attributed to Viktor Kalashnikov (son of Mikhail) per industry reporting; public sources mostly credit 'Izhmash' institutionally. Replaced gradually by PPK-20 (approved 2020).
Background
Designed by Viktor Kalashnikov to leverage existing AKS-74U manufacturing tooling for a 9×19mm SMG. The 'Vityaz' name (Russian for 'brave warrior' / 'knight') was taken from the 1st Special Purpose Unit of Spetsnaz (the 'Vityaz' detachment), which requested the weapon. Operators trained on AK-pattern rifles transition immediately - controls, manual of arms, and disassembly are nearly identical to the AKS-74U.
