Overview
The Ruger American Compact is a compact-frame, striker-fired semi-automatic pistol chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum, introduced in 2016 as the shorter, more concealable variant of the full-size Ruger American Duty pistol. Featuring a 90mm (3.55-inch) stainless steel barrel with black nitride finish, the Compact ships with both a flush-fit 12-round magazine and an extended 17-round magazine with grip sleeve, giving owners flexibility between a concealable profile and full-size capacity. Weighing 828 grams (29.2 oz) unloaded, it retains all of the Duty model's premium features including the pre-tensioned striker system for a crisp trigger pull, Novak LoMount Carry three-dot sights, Picatinny accessory rail, ambidextrous slide stop and magazine release, and a modular wrap-around grip system with three interchangeable backstrap inserts (small, medium, and large) for a custom fit. The stainless steel slide and barrel receive a black nitride finish for enhanced corrosion resistance, while the one-piece glass-filled nylon grip frame provides a lightweight yet rigid foundation.

The Ruger American Compact was introduced approximately one year after the full-size Duty model, extending the platform's reach into the concealed carry and compact duty market. The pre-tensioned striker system partially pre-loads the striker during the slide cycle, resulting in a lighter and more consistent trigger pull of approximately 6 pounds (26.7 N) without compromising ignition reliability. The recoil-reducing barrel cam and low-mass slide work together to mitigate felt recoil, making the Compact easier to shoot accurately for its size. The pistol is rated for +P ammunition. The grip frame accepts the full-size 17-round magazines with the included grip sleeve for a seamless fit, giving the Compact effectively the same ammunition capacity as the full-size model when needed. The Pro variant omits the manual safety for a simplified manual of arms preferred by many law enforcement and experienced civilian shooters. MSRP ranges from $579-$649. The Compact ships with two nickel-Teflon plated steel magazines. The barrel rifling is 1:10-inch right-hand twist with 6 grooves.
Background
The Ruger American Pistol platform was developed with extensive input from law enforcement and military personnel, and the full-size version was submitted to the U.S. Army's Modular Handgun System (MHS) competition to replace the Beretta M9. While SIG Sauer's P320 won that contract, the development process yielded innovations like the pre-tensioned striker and recoil-reducing barrel cam that carried directly into the Compact variant. The Compact model addresses the most common use case for modern striker-fired pistols -- a do-everything gun small enough for concealed carry but large enough for duty or nightstand use.
