Overview
The Squad Designated Marksman Rifle (SDM-R) is an accurized M16-based designated marksman rifle built by the United States Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) for deployment with the 3rd Infantry Division in Iraq. Approximately 240 rifles were hand-built by AMU armorers, creating a precision weapon system that extended the infantry squad's effective engagement range to 600 meters using the standard 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge. The SDM-R replaces the standard M16A2/A4 barrel with a fluted 20-inch stainless steel Douglas barrel featuring a 1:8 twist rate, optimized for firing heavier 77-grain Mk 262 Mod 1 match ammunition. A Daniel Defense DDM4 Rail 12.0 free-floating handguard provides a rigid accessory mounting platform that does not contact the barrel, ensuring bipod pressure does not affect point of impact. The issued optic was a 4x32 ACOG, and a KAC two-stage match-grade trigger replaced the standard GI trigger for improved accuracy. The rifle was informally known as 'the AMU rifle' among soldiers.

The SDM-R was not an official US Army program of record -- the rifles were built specifically for one deployment cycle of the 3rd Infantry Division. This makes the SDM-R one of the rarer US military designated marksman rifles. The rifle used M16A2 or A4 lower receivers with fixed A2 stocks and was equipped with a Matech Industries 600-meter backup iron sight. The concept of a squad-level designated marksman using an accurized M16 proved so successful in Iraq that it influenced the development of the subsequent M110A1 SDMR program (Squad Designated Marksman Rifle), which adopted the HK417-based M110A1 as a formal program of record. The SDM-R demonstrated that with proper barrel selection, free-floating handguard, match trigger, and appropriate ammunition, the AR-15/M16 platform could deliver consistent sub-MOA accuracy at extended ranges.
Background
The SDM-R was born out of urgent necessity in Iraq, where US Army squads discovered they were being engaged by insurgents at ranges beyond the effective capability of their standard M16A4 and M4 carbines.
