Overview
The SIG716 is SIG Sauer's full-power 7.62x51mm NATO battle rifle, an AR-10-pattern platform that applies the proven short-stroke pushrod gas piston operating system of the company's 5.56mm SIG516 to the larger .308 cartridge. The piston system, with a four-position adjustable gas valve (normal, adverse/fouling, suppressed, and off), keeps the bolt carrier group running cleaner and cooler than direct-impingement designs and tunes the rifle for suppressed or fouled operation. The standard Patrol configuration pairs a 16-inch free-floating, chrome-lined match-grade heavy barrel with a 1:10 twist, a SIG-designed aluminum quad-rail handguard, Magpul ACS stock and MIAD grip, ambidextrous controls, folding backup sights, and an A2 flash suppressor. The rifle feeds from SR-25/DPMS-pattern magazines and is marketed to law enforcement patrol, designated-marksman, and civilian users.

Base Patrol rifle weighs approximately 9.3 lb (about 4,218 g) unloaded. Factory single-stage MIL-SPEC trigger measures roughly 7.6 lb (about 34 N). Ships with one 20-round Magpul PMAG. State-compliant configurations offered for MA, NJ, NY, and CT; the standard Patrol is not California-compliant. Later DMR and Precision Marksman variants add longer/heavier barrels and two-stage triggers.
Background
SIG developed the 716 by scaling up its 5.56mm SIG516 piston rifle to the harder-hitting 7.62 NATO cartridge, giving patrol officers and marksmen the reach and barrier penetration of a full-power round in a familiar AR-pattern package.
