Also known as: SIG Pro SP2022, SP2022, SIG 2022, SIG Pro 2022
Overview
The SIG Sauer SP2022 is a polymer-framed, double-action/single-action (DA/SA) semi-automatic service pistol that evolved from the SIG Pro series. Introduced in 2004 as a refinement of the earlier SP2009 and SP2340, the SP2022 was designed specifically for law enforcement and military contracts, most notably the massive French police procurement that gave the pistol its name - the contract was intended to run through 2022. Chambered primarily in 9x19mm Parabellum with 15+1 capacity, the SP2022 features a 3.9-inch barrel, 7.4-inch overall length, and weighs 29 ounces unloaded. The DA/SA trigger system provides a 10-pound double-action first pull that transitions to a 4.4-pound single-action pull for subsequent shots, with a frame-mounted decocking lever for safe hammer lowering. Built with a reinforced polymer frame and stainless steel slide with Nitron finish, the SP2022 includes SIGLITE night sights, a Picatinny accessory rail, interchangeable grip panels, and an automatic firing pin safety block. The pistol was the first polymer-framed handgun in SIG Sauer's lineup and one of the first pistols to incorporate a universal accessory rail. Over 250,000 units were produced for the French National Police (DGPN) and National Gendarmerie (DGGN) alone, making it one of the largest police firearms contracts in history. The SP2022 is also used by the Colombian National Police and the United States Coast Guard.

Notes
The SP2022 designation reflects the intended 20-year service life of the French police contract, running from 2002 to 2022. The SIG Pro series began with the SP2340 in .40 S&W (1998) and SP2009 in 9mm (1999), with the SP2022 consolidating both into a single improved platform in 2004. French police SP2022 pistols were manufactured in Germany (Eckernforde plant), while commercial variants are produced in both Germany and the USA (Exeter, New Hampshire). The pistol is available in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG, with caliber conversion requiring only a barrel and recoil spring swap. The DA/SA trigger system with decocking lever follows the traditional SIG Sauer operating philosophy familiar to users of the P226 and P229. Some military and law enforcement contracts include manual safety variants. The SP2022 is notable for being SIG Sauer's most affordable full-featured service pistol, making it accessible to budget-conscious agencies and civilian shooters while retaining core SIG Sauer quality and reliability.
Background
The SP2022 earned its name from one of the most audacious police procurement contracts ever signed - France committed to arming its entire national police and gendarmerie forces with the SIG Pro platform through 2022. Over a quarter million pistols were delivered, making it the standard sidearm across virtually all French law enforcement. The surplus from this massive contract has since flooded the civilian market, with unissued French police SP2022s becoming some of the best-value SIG pistols available.
