Overview
The Smith & Wesson M&P Shield EZ is a compact, internal hammer-fired semi-automatic pistol designed specifically for shooters who have difficulty manipulating conventional semi-automatic slides. Introduced in 2019 in 9mm (the .380 ACP version arrived first in 2018), the Shield EZ features an easy-to-rack slide that requires significantly less force than standard semi-automatics, easy-to-load single-stack magazines with load-assist tabs, and a grip safety reminiscent of the 1911 platform. The pistol operates via a short-recoil, tilting-barrel locked-breech action with an internal hammer that provides a crisp single-action trigger pull of approximately 5 pounds 13 ounces (26 N). The 3.675-inch (93mm) stainless steel barrel is finished in Armornite, as is the stainless steel slide. The polymer frame features aggressive texturing, an 18-degree grip angle for natural point of aim, and a Picatinny accessory rail on the dust cover. Standard sights are white-dot front and rear with a drift-adjustable square-notch rear sight. The 9mm version feeds from an 8-round single-stack magazine for a total capacity of 8+1. An ambidextrous thumb safety is standard on most models, along with a tactile loaded chamber indicator that protrudes from the top of the slide when a round is chambered. The Shield EZ weighs 23.2 ounces (658 grams) empty with an overall length of 6.8 inches (173mm).

The Shield EZ was originally launched in .380 ACP in 2018 and expanded to 9mm in late 2019, with a .30 Super Carry version following in 2022. The 'EZ' designation refers to three key ease-of-use features: the easy-to-rack slide, the easy-to-load magazines, and the easy-to-clean takedown procedure. The slide requires approximately 30% less force to rack than a standard M&P Shield, making it accessible to shooters with arthritis, reduced hand strength, or other physical limitations. The grip safety must be depressed before the trigger will function, providing an additional layer of safety beyond the thumb safety. The internal hammer mechanism (as opposed to striker-fired) contributes to the lighter slide-racking force because the hammer spring does not resist slide movement during racking. The tactile loaded chamber indicator is a raised tab on the top of the slide that can be felt in the dark. Performance Center versions feature ported barrels, fiber optic sights, and tuned triggers. The Shield EZ has been particularly popular with female shooters, older shooters, and new gun owners. Truglo tritium night sights are available as an option. Typical muzzle velocity from the 3.675-inch barrel is approximately 1115 fps (340 m/s) with 115-grain 9mm loads. The loaded weight estimate includes eight 9mm cartridges at approximately 12.5g each. Rifling is 1:10 inches (254mm) twist with 6 grooves, right-hand twist. MSRP is approximately $479.
Background
The Shield EZ was born from Smith & Wesson's recognition that a significant portion of the gun-buying public -- particularly women, older adults, and those with physical limitations -- struggled with the slide manipulation required by conventional semi-automatics. Rather than simply making a lighter-recoiling gun, S&W engineered the entire platform around ease of use, from the reduced-force slide to the load-assist magazine tabs to the grip safety that eliminated the need to remember to disengage a thumb safety under stress. The result was one of the most commercially successful purpose-built accessibility firearms ever produced, proving that 'easy to use' and 'effective defensive tool' were not mutually exclusive concepts.
