Overview
The Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P R8 is an eight-shot, double-action/single-action revolver chambered in .357 Magnum, built on Smith & Wesson's large N-frame with a scandium alloy frame. Introduced in 2007 as the law enforcement companion to the TRR8 (Tactical Rail Revolver), the M&P R8 was designed as a duty revolver for officers who require the inherent reliability of a revolver combined with modern accessory compatibility and near-semi-automatic capacity. The scandium alloy frame keeps the weight at 35.8 ounces (1,015 grams) despite the large N-frame platform and 127mm (5-inch) stainless steel barrel, making it remarkably light for an eight-shot .357 Magnum. The integral Picatinny accessory rail on the barrel shroud allows mounting of weapon lights and lasers, providing the accessory versatility typically associated with semi-automatic duty pistols. The stainless steel cylinder is cut for moon clips (included) for rapid simultaneous loading and unloading, though the rimmed .357 Magnum and .38 Special cartridges can also be loaded individually. The Performance Center tuned action delivers a smooth double-action trigger pull of approximately 8 pounds (36 N) with an adjustable trigger stop, while single-action pull is approximately 2.5 pounds (11 N). Sights consist of an interchangeable front dot sight and an adjustable V-notch rear blade. The matte black finish provides a non-reflective tactical appearance, and the pistol ships with synthetic rubber grips designed for duty use.

Background
The M&P R8 was born from the same operational requirement as the TRR8, when law enforcement SWAT teams discovered that semi-automatic pistols were prone to malfunction when pressed against ballistic shields during tactical entries. The revolver's fixed cylinder eliminated this issue entirely. While the TRR8 was marketed toward tactical and competition users with its dual removable rail system, the M&P R8 carried the Military & Police designation and integral accessory rail that signaled its intended role as a duty weapon. Together, the R8 and TRR8 proved that the revolver platform could be modernized for 21st-century tactical requirements, offering eight rounds of .357 Magnum in a package that weighed less than many fully loaded polymer-frame semi-automatics.
