Notes
The K11 suffered several development setbacks including battery fires and grenade malfunctions during testing, leading to a production hiatus starting in 2014 while issues were addressed. The integrated fire control system allows the operator to lase a target and program the 20mm grenade to detonate at a precise distance, enabling engagement of targets behind cover. The 20mm grenade launcher barrel is 405mm long and feeds from a 5-round detachable box magazine. Weight of 6.1 kg includes optics and battery but excludes magazines. Conceptually similar to the cancelled US XM29 OICW but actually fielded in limited numbers.
Background
The K11 represents South Korea's ambitious attempt to field a next-generation infantry weapon combining direct fire capability with programmable airburst munitions. While the US abandoned its similar XM29 OICW program, South Korea pressed forward and became the first nation to field such a weapon. The system's fire control unit can program 20mm grenades to detonate at a precise distance above or behind enemy cover, theoretically making concealment ineffective.
