The PT-92 was developed after Taurus purchased Beretta's São Paulo factory in 1980, inheriting the tooling and design for the Beretta 92. The frame-mounted safety on the PT-92 is considered by many to be superior to the Beretta's slide-mounted safety, as it does not require breaking the firing grip to operate. The open-slide design and tilting-barrel short recoil action are carried over from the Beretta 92.
Background
When Taurus acquired Beretta's Brazilian factory in 1980, they inherited one of the world's most proven pistol designs. The PT-92 represents the Brazilian evolution of the Beretta 92, with refinements that some shooters prefer over the Italian original.
