Overview
The Trichy Assault Rifle (TAR) is an Indian 7.62x39mm gas-operated, selective-fire assault rifle manufactured by Ordnance Factory Tiruchirappalli. It is a milled-receiver clone of the Bulgarian Arsenal AR-M1, itself a Kalashnikov-pattern design, modified with fixed, down-folding, and telescoping M4-style stock options. Adopted primarily by Indian central armed police and paramilitary forces, it was developed to reduce dependence on imported AR-M1 rifles under India's self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) policy.

Notes
Despite the name, the TAR fires the intermediate 7.62x39mm cartridge and is an AKM-pattern assault rifle, not a 7.62x51mm battle rifle. An earlier Trichy rifle of the late 2000s used an FN FAL-derived receiver before the design was standardised on the Bulgarian AR-M1 platform. The separate Ordnance Factory '1A1' is the actual Indian FN FAL/L1A1-pattern 7.62x51mm self-loading rifle.
Background
Though chambered in the Soviet 7.62x39mm and built on a Bulgarian Kalashnikov design, the Trichy rifle carries the name of the South Indian temple city of Tiruchirappalli ("Trichy"), home of the ordnance factory that builds it.
