Overview
The Vektor Z88 is a South African semi-automatic pistol chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum. Developed in the late 1980s by Lyttelton Engineering Works (LIW) under the Vektor brand, it is a licence-derived copy of the Italian Beretta 92F, adopted because the international arms embargo against apartheid-era South Africa cut off access to imported sidearms. Like its parent, it uses an open-slide, short-recoil action with a falling locking block, a double-action/single-action trigger, and a 15-round magazine. It became the standard sidearm of the South African National Defence Force and the South African Police Service, and later spawned the polymer-framed Vektor SP1.

Notes
The Z88 is mechanically near-identical to the Beretta 92F. Domestic production was undertaken because the United Nations arms embargo prevented South Africa from importing the Beretta directly.
Background
The Z88 exists because of the arms embargo imposed on apartheid South Africa: unable to import the Beretta 92, the state arms industry reverse-engineered and locally manufactured the design as the Vektor Z88.
