Also known as: Super X4, SX4, Winchester Super X4

Overview

The Winchester SX4 (Super X4) is a gas-operated semi-automatic shotgun introduced at the 2017 SHOT Show as the successor to the acclaimed Super X3. Built on Winchester's Active Valve gas system, the SX4 self-adjusts to a wide range of loads by venting excess gas, allowing it to reliably cycle everything from light target loads to heavy 3-inch and 3.5-inch magnum waterfowl shells. The action retains the proven internals of the SX3 while adding improved ergonomics: a rounded, close-radius grip, textured gripping surfaces, and an oversized bolt handle and bolt release glove-friendly enough for cold-weather hunting. The back-bored, nickel-Teflon-coated barrel is threaded for the Invector-Plus choke system and topped with a ventilated rib and a TruGlo long-bead fiber-optic front sight. Available in 12 and 20 gauge, in 24-, 26-, and 28-inch barrel lengths, in both left- and right-handed configurations, and in over two dozen finish and camo variations including waterfowl, upland, and universal hunter models.

Notes

MSRP approximately $1,020-$1,130 depending on configuration. The SX4 is assembled in Portugal at FN facilities and imported by the Browning Arms Company, which handles Winchester's shotgun and rifle lines. The Active Valve gas system is the core technology carried over from the SX3. The Quadra-Vent ports and Inflex 2 recoil pad are designed to soften felt recoil, making the SX4 one of the softer-shooting semi-autos in its price class. Over 25 distinct variants exist across gauge, barrel length, hand orientation, and finish.

Background

The SX4 is the fourth generation of Winchester's Super X autoloader family, a lineage that traces back to the gas-operated Super X Model 1 of 1974. Winchester engineers positioned it as a value-focused workhorse, deliberately keeping the price below most competing semi-autos while retaining the SX3's record-setting cycling speed.
