Overview
The Zastava M17 is a Serbian modular designated marksman rifle developed by Zastava Arms, first revealed by the Serbian Army in 2017. Built on a heavily modified AK-pattern long-stroke gas piston platform, the M17 is chambered in a proprietary 6.5x38.7mm cartridge closely related to the 6.5mm Grendel. The rifle represents Serbia's attempt to develop a modern intermediate-caliber DMR that bridges the gap between 5.56mm assault rifles and 7.62mm battle rifles, leveraging the 6.5mm caliber's superior ballistic coefficient and retained energy at extended ranges. The M17 incorporates several modernization features unusual for AK-family weapons, including an AR-style charging handle, a monolithic dust cover with integrated full-length Picatinny rail, a quick-change barrel system allowing barrel replacement in under 60 seconds, and an adjustable folding stock reminiscent of the ACR/SCAR platform. The modular design allows the base M05 system in 7.62x39mm to be converted to the 6.5mm DMR configuration, providing logistical flexibility for the Serbian military.

The Zastava M17 is NOT a .50 BMG anti-materiel rifle as sometimes misidentified. It is a 6.5mm intermediate-caliber DMR based on the AK action. The rifle's chambering evolved from the standard 6.5mm Grendel (6.5x39mm) to a proprietary 6.5x38.7mm cartridge developed by the Serbian Military Technical Institute, though the differences between the two may be minimal. As of 2024, the M17 and its cartridge have not been formally adopted by the Serbian Armed Forces and remain in testing and evaluation. The M17 is related to the Zastava M19 modular assault rifle program, which explored similar modernization concepts. Development commenced around 2016, with the first prototype designated M17 debuting in 2017.

The Zastava M17 represents Serbia's bet on the 6.5mm intermediate caliber revolution, potentially making it the first military to adopt a 6.5mm Grendel-class cartridge as a frontline DMR round.
