Notes
The 92FS designation stands for 'Federale Sicurezza' (Federal Security), introduced after a safety improvement to prevent slide separation. The U.S. military M9 variant served as the standard-issue sidearm from 1985 until it was replaced by the SIG Sauer P320 (M17/M18) in 2017. The open-slide design allows for faster cycling and easier field stripping. The pistol uses a rotating barrel locking system and features a reversible magazine release for ambidextrous use. Standard magazines hold 15 rounds, though 17-18 round extended magazines are available.
Background
The Beretta 92 famously won the 1985 U.S. military XM9 trials, controversially beating the SIG Sauer P226. It served as the standard U.S. military sidearm for 32 years before being replaced by the SIG P320 (M17/M18) in 2017. Beretta is the oldest active firearms manufacturer in the world, founded in 1526.
