DPMS GII

DPMS Panther Arms · Battle Rifle · Discontinued · 2013

Also known as: DPMS G2, Gen II, GII Hunter

Overview

The DPMS GII (G2) is a second-generation AR-10-pattern semi-automatic rifle chambered in .308 Winchester/7.62x51mm NATO, launched by DPMS Panther Arms in 2013. It was a ground-up redesign of the large-frame .308 AR aimed at trimming size and weight: both receiver halves and the bolt carrier were made shorter, slimmer and lighter, and the rifle was engineered to accept standard AR-15 fore-ends and rail systems. The result is a full-power .308 rifle that handles much closer to an AR-15 carbine, with base hunting models weighing well under 8 pounds.

Notes

The GII's defining feature is its reduced-footprint receiver set and AR-15 fore-end compatibility, plus a Steel Bolt and monolithic carrier intended to improve durability. Offered in Hunter (20"), Compact Hunter (16"), Recon and SASS (18") configurations.

Background

DPMS shrank the chunky .308 AR receiver enough that the GII could borrow AR-15 handguards and rails, letting shooters build a full-power .308 that carries almost like a 5.56 carbine.
