Overview
The Heckler & Koch MSG90 (Militarisches Scharfschutzengewehr 90, or Military Sniper Rifle 90) is a semi-automatic sniper rifle developed as a lighter, more rugged, and more cost-effective military variant of the legendary HK PSG1. While the PSG1 was designed primarily for law enforcement precision shooting and counter-terrorism use, the MSG90 was specifically engineered for military field deployment where the PSG1's excessive weight and delicate nature were significant drawbacks. Sharing the same roller-delayed blowback operating system derived from the G3 battle rifle, the MSG90 reduces weight by approximately 1.3 kilograms through the use of a lighter barrel profile and simplified stock system. The rifle retains the PSG1's polygonal rifling and HK's renowned cold hammer-forged barrel manufacturing, delivering consistent sub-MOA accuracy with match-grade ammunition. The MSG90 was adopted by the Bundeswehr and exported to numerous military customers worldwide.

The MSG90 uses the same G3/HK91 magazine well and can accept 5-, 10-, or 20-round detachable box magazines. The MSG90-A1 variant features a suppressor-ready barrel with a threaded muzzle and updated furniture. While lighter than the PSG1, the MSG90 still weighs nearly 6kg empty, making it one of the heavier rifles in its class. The roller-delayed blowback action, while providing excellent accuracy and reliability, produces a characteristic delayed ejection pattern and requires more frequent cleaning in dusty environments compared to gas-operated systems. The MSG90 was designed to maintain 1.5 MOA accuracy or better, compared to the PSG1's sub-MOA guarantee, reflecting its more practical military role.
Background
The MSG90 was born from the German military's frustration with the PSG1's impracticality as a field weapon. While the PSG1 could achieve extraordinary accuracy, its 7.2kg weight and sensitivity to rough handling made it unsuitable for infantry snipers operating in austere conditions. The MSG90 represented HK's pragmatic answer: sacrifice a small margin of benchrest accuracy in exchange for a rifle that could survive the rigors of military field service while still delivering precision far exceeding that of any standard infantry weapon.
