The M110 SASS was fielded to the U.S. Army in 2007 and later adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps to replace the Mk 11 and some M39 EMR rifles. The rifle is typically issued with a KAC quick-detach suppressor, AN/PVS-10 night vision sight, Harris bipod, and cleaning/maintenance kit. The M110A1 CSASS (Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System) was developed as a lighter and more compact successor based on the Heckler & Koch G28/HK417 platform rather than the SR-25. The M110A2 variant was first seen in service in early 2022. The original M110 weighs approximately 15.3 pounds unloaded and can sustain a practical rate of fire of 24 rounds per minute. Notable combat engagements with the M110 include operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Background
The M110 SASS was developed from the SR-25 platform designed by Eugene Stoner and C. Reed Knight Jr., combining the AR-10's operating system with match-grade accuracy. It filled a critical gap between bolt-action sniper rifles and standard infantry rifles, giving designated marksmen rapid semi-automatic follow-up shots at extended ranges.
