Overview

The Martini-Henry Mk I is a single-shot, breech-loading British service rifle adopted in June 1871 as the first production pattern of the Martini-Henry family that armed the British Empire at the height of the Victorian era. It married the self-cocking falling-block action of Swiss-Austrian engineer Friedrich von Martini (itself derived from the American Peabody dropping-block) with the seven-groove polygonal rifling patented by Scottish gunmaker Alexander Henry. Pulling the finger-lever beneath the receiver dropped the breechblock, ejected the spent case, and cocked the internal striker, allowing a fresh .577/450 cartridge to be loaded by hand. The massive bottlenecked black-powder cartridge drove a 480-grain (31.1 g) paper-patched lead bullet at roughly 411 m/s for devastating stopping power. The Mk I is distinguished from later marks by its short cocking lever, brass hinge (axis) pin rather than steel, large cocking indicator, button-head ramrod, chequered butt plate, wide V-notch backsight, and a butt-mounted rear sling swivel. Soldiers complained the short lever required excessive force to operate, prompting the long-lever Mk II of 1877; most surviving Mk I rifles were subsequently converted to Mk I/II standard, making unaltered first-pattern examples extremely rare today.

Exact Mk I figures are not separately recorded and are complicated by the large-scale conversion of Mk I rifles to the long-lever Mk II/Mk I-II pattern. Total Martini-Henry production across all four marks is estimated at 500,000 to 1,000,000, made at RSAF Enfield, Birmingham Small Arms, the London Small Arms Company, and the National Arms & Ammunition Company.

Notes

The Mk I was officially listed as 'Mk1' only until 20 October 1871, before the mark system was formalised. Its short lever demanded more cocking effort than soldiers liked, and a wartime/peacetime program converted large numbers of Mk I rifles to the improved long-lever Mk II configuration, so genuine unmodified first-pattern Mk I rifles with the safety catch, brass axis pin, and button-head ramrod are now scarce. Production of the Mk I ran roughly 1871-1876 at the Royal Small Arms Factory Enfield, with additional manufacture by Birmingham Small Arms (BSA), the London Small Arms Company, and the National Arms & Ammunition Company. The .577/450's early thin rolled-brass foil cartridges were prone to deforming and sticking in black-powder-fouled chambers -- the extraction failures later blamed at Isandlwana in 1879 -- a problem resolved by solid-drawn brass cases from the mid-1880s.

Background

When officials worried that the recoil of a full-power infantry rifle would be too punishing, the Martini-Henry was deliberately built heavy at the muzzle to tame the kick of the enormous .577/450 black-powder round; even so, the cartridge's recoil became legendary among recruits. The short-lever Mk I drew enough complaints about the force needed to cock it that the Army redesigned the lever within six years -- yet the action proved so durable that decades-old Martini-Henrys and Khyber Pass copies were still being recovered from tribal arsenals in Afghanistan well into the 21st century.
