The SS1 is produced in numerous variants designated V1 through V5, plus marine (M1/M2), raider (R5), police (Sabhara), and customs (SBC-1) configurations. The standard SS1-V1 features a 449mm barrel and folding stock, while the V2 uses a shorter 363mm barrel, and the V5 Commando has an ultra-short 252mm barrel weighing only 3.37kg. The rifle accepts both 20-round and 30-round STANAG-compatible magazines. All variants except the SBC-1 feature three-position selective fire. The SS1's external appearance is nearly identical to the FN FNC, from the pistol grip to the stock, receiver, and barrel profile. PT Pindad has exported the SS1 to several countries including Cambodia, Mali, Nigeria, and the UAE.
Background
The SS1 represents Indonesia's strategic decision to establish domestic weapons manufacturing capability through licensed production rather than outright imports. PT Pindad's origins date back to 1808 under Dutch colonial rule, making it one of the oldest defense manufacturers in Southeast Asia. The FNC platform was chosen over competing designs in part due to Belgium's willingness to transfer manufacturing technology.
