Overview

The PP-9 Klin is a compact Russian submachine gun, a strengthened derivative of the PP-91 Kedr developed from Yevgeny Dragunov's design lineage and produced by the KBP Instrument Design Bureau. It was reworked to fire the hotter 9x18mm PMM (Modernized Makarov) cartridge, with radial grooves cut into its chamber to ease case extraction under the higher pressure; the fluted chamber also lets it safely fire standard 9x18mm Makarov ammunition. It retains the Kedr's blowback action, top-folding steel stock, stamped-steel receiver, and pocket-sized form, but fires at a markedly higher cyclic rate of around 1,000 rounds per minute. It was produced from the mid-1990s to 2002 on order of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Notes

Klin (Wedge) differs from the standard Kedr mainly by a reinforced bolt and a fluted (radial-grooved) chamber tuned for the high-pressure 9x18mm PMM round, which pushes a lighter bullet to roughly 430 m/s. The same chamber treatment allows interchangeable use of ordinary 9x18mm Makarov ammunition.

Background

The Klin descends from a submachine gun penned by Yevgeny Dragunov, far better known for the SVD sniper rifle; to tame the souped-up 9x18 PMM round it gained grooves machined into the chamber walls so the spent case would not stick under the extra pressure.
