Also known as: Security 380, Lite Rack Security-380

Overview

The Ruger Security-380 is a compact semi-automatic pistol chambered in .380 ACP, introduced in 2023 as part of Ruger's Security line. Designed with the Lite Rack system, it features refined slide serrations, pronounced cocking ears, and a lighter recoil spring that make the slide significantly easier to manipulate than standard pistols, specifically targeting shooters with reduced hand strength, new shooters, and those who prefer a softer-shooting platform. The pistol uses an internal hammer-fired Secure Action fire-control system built around a one-piece, precision-machined steel chassis housed in a high-performance glass-filled nylon grip frame. The 3.42-inch (87mm) alloy steel barrel and through-hardened alloy steel slide both feature a black oxide finish. The Security-380 ships with one 10-round and one 15-round magazine, providing 10+1 or 15+1 capacity depending on configuration. Sights consist of a fiber optic front sight and a drift-adjustable rear sight. Safety features include an integrated trigger safety, an external manual safety, and an internal hammer catch mechanism. The pistol weighs 19.7 ounces (558g) empty with an overall length of 6.52 inches (166mm), height of 4.35 inches (110mm), and slide width of 1.02 inches (26mm). Rifling is 6-groove, right-hand twist at 1:10 inches (254mm). The trigger breaks at approximately 4.5 pounds (21 N). MSRP starts at $389.

Notes

The Security-380 is based on the architecture of the larger Ruger Security-9, scaled down for the .380 ACP cartridge. The Lite Rack system was developed in response to market demand for easier-to-operate handguns, particularly for elderly shooters and those with arthritis or limited grip strength. The lighter recoil spring combined with the low-recoiling .380 ACP cartridge makes the slide manipulation effort substantially less than a typical 9mm pistol. The Secure Action fire-control system uses an internal hammer rather than a striker, providing a consistent trigger pull. The pistol incorporates a manual safety, which is relatively uncommon among modern polymer-framed pistols but appreciated by new shooters. Model 3839 ships with two 10-round magazines; model 3855 ships with one 10-round and one 15-round magazine. Not California or Massachusetts compliant. Loaded weight estimate includes 15 rounds of .380 ACP at approximately 8.1g each.

Background

The Security-380 earned the NRA's American Rifleman magazine Editor's Choice award shortly after introduction, praised for making .380 ACP shooting accessible to a broader audience through its innovative Lite Rack system. It represents Ruger's commitment to designing firearms that prioritize ease of use alongside reliability.
