Notes
The P224 was designed primarily for law enforcement officers who wanted a backup gun with identical controls to their duty P226 or P229. Available trigger configurations included standard DA/SA, DA/SA with Short Reset Trigger (SRT), and the DAK (Double Action Kellerman) double-action-only system. The standard magazine held 10 rounds in 9mm (12 in .40 S&W and .357 SIG were also 10-round), but the pistol could accept full-size P229 magazines for 12 or 15 rounds with a baseplate extension. Accuracy was commendable, with reviewers achieving sub-2-inch groups at 15 yards and 3.5-inch groups at 25 yards from a rest. The P224's short production run and commercial failure were largely attributed to market timing, as polymer-framed striker-fired subcompacts had become the dominant concealed-carry platform by the early 2010s.
Background
The P224 filled a niche that the market ultimately decided didn't need filling. SIG designed it for officers who wanted a backup pistol with the same controls as their duty P226 or P229, but by 2012 the concealed-carry market had shifted decisively toward lighter polymer-framed striker-fired pistols. The P224 was well-built and accurate, but at 25+ ounces and $1,125, it couldn't compete with guns half its weight and two-thirds its price.
