Overview
The Steyr M9-A1 is a semi-automatic pistol chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum, manufactured by Steyr Mannlicher of Austria. It is the A1-generation evolution of the original Steyr M series introduced in the late 1990s, updated with an integrated Picatinny accessory rail, a redesigned grip, and a limited-access internal locking system. The M9-A1 is best known for its extremely low bore axis, which sits the barrel close to the shooter's hand to minimize muzzle flip, and for its distinctive trapezoidal sight system that pairs a triangular front post with a notched trapezoidal rear for fast target acquisition. The striker-fired Reset Action System delivers a consistent, relatively light trigger pull for every shot. With a 4-inch barrel and a 17-round magazine, the mid-size M9-A1 is well suited to duty carry, home defense, and recreational shooting, blending Austrian engineering with a flat-shooting, ergonomic platform.

The M9-A1 designation reflects the 9mm chambering (M9) of the mid-size A1-generation frame; compact (C9-A1) and subcompact (S9-A1) variants share the action. Background
The Steyr M was designed by Wilhelm Bubits, an Austrian police officer turned firearms engineer who later designed the Caracal pistol for the UAE. The M series' extremely low bore axis and trapezoidal sights were ahead of their time when introduced in 1999, but distribution and marketing setbacks in the United States limited its commercial success despite a devoted following.
