Annual production capacity of approximately 40,000 units as of 2016. First ordered by TNI in 2002-2003. Initial batch of 150 SS2-V4 units procured in 2007. Exported to Bangladesh and the UAE. The SS2 is progressively replacing all SS1 rifles across the Indonesian military and police.

The SS2 is gradually replacing the older SS1 assault rifles that have been in service with Indonesian security forces since the 1990s. As of 2016, Pindad reported annual production capacity of approximately 40,000 SS2 rifles. The SS2-V4 designated marksman variant features a lengthened barrel, Picatinny rail for scope mounting, and removed front sight for improved long-range accuracy. The SS2-V7, launched in May 2016, is a subsonic variant intended for special forces operations with an integrated suppressor. The folding stock reduces overall length from 985mm to 740mm for the V1 variant. All variants accept standard STANAG magazines in 20 or 30 round capacities.
Background
The Pindad SS2 represents Indonesia's ambition to develop a fully indigenous assault rifle platform, building on decades of experience licence-producing the Belgian FN FNC as the SS1. PT Pindad, whose origins trace back to a Dutch colonial weapons workshop founded in 1808, evolved from a simple licence manufacturer into a genuine arms designer with the SS2 program. The rifle's FNC heritage is visible in its long-stroke gas piston layout and overall receiver architecture, but the SS2 incorporated significant Indonesian design input including the modular variant system, modern rail interfaces, and a side-folding stock. The program demonstrated that Southeast Asian defense industries could produce competitive modern small arms rather than relying solely on imports.
