Is the GunSpec API free to use?

Yes! Our Explorer tier gives you 200 requests per month at no cost. No credit card required. Public list endpoints are available for firearms, manufacturers, calibers, and categories.

Do I need an API key to get started?

Yes, all endpoints require an API key. Sign up for a free Explorer key to get started — no credit card required. Higher tiers unlock additional endpoints like search, compare, images, and game stats.

What happens if I exceed my rate limit?

You'll receive a 429 Too Many Requests response. The response includes a Retry-After header indicating when you can make requests again. Upgrading your tier increases both your monthly quota and per-minute rate limit.

How accurate and up-to-date is the firearm data?

Our database contains —+ firearms with detailed specifications sourced from manufacturer documentation. We regularly update the database with new models and corrections. If you find an inaccuracy, please report it via GitHub.

Can I use the API for commercial projects?

Absolutely. All paid tiers (Builder, Studio, Enterprise) include full commercial usage rights. Build games, training applications, collector tools, e-commerce platforms, or any other product. No attribution required.
